The Read Receipt is a line added to the message header like thisĭisposition-Notification-To: Name of Sender You can send Read Receipts with some messages, or all messages, but don’t expect to get one back. We occasionally use it for important messages or complaint emails but don’t expect it to matter. Use Outlook software connected to a Gmail, or any other mail account, then Outlook can send a read receipt if you choose. You can get Read Receipt options for any mail account. Gmail paid accounts (GSuite) do have Read Receipt choices. Gmail free accounts used from a web browser don’t have any Read Receipt options to request or respond. However, you can control how to respond to Read Receipt requests on incoming message from Settings | Mail | Automatic Processing | Message Options. free account web interface do NOT have an option to request Read Receipts with outgoing messages. Some email software, especially web based email clients, don’t have any Read Receipt options. That can happen automatically or simply by clicking on the email. Read Receipt only means the message status change from ‘Unread’ to ‘Read’.
Read Receipts don’t mean the email is really readĮven if you get back a ‘Read Receipt’ that doesn’t mean the receiver actually read and understood your email.
Read Receipts are considered an intrusion on the readers privacy, so the automatic response is turned off. The Read Receipt is optional for the receiver, most people and organizations turn the read response OFF. Read Receipts usually don’t work! It’s the dirty little secret that you won’t see mentioned when boasting about this feature. After you configure Gmail for IMAP, you can add your Gmail account to Outlook. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP to bring up the POP and IMAP settings. Click the gear icon at the top right, then choose Settings. To learn how to turn on these options for all e-mail messages that you send, see Be notified when messages are delivered or read.Turn that option on to add a Read Receipt request to your email. Here are the steps: Log into your Gmail account. Under Voting and tracking options, select the Request a delivery receipt for this message or the Request a read receipt for this message check box. In addition, the recipient's e-mail program might not support read receipts. If the message is read-only in the Reading Pane, a read receipt may not be sent. The message recipient might determine whether a read request has been requested and decline to send one.
However, do not rely solely on these receipts. The contents of the message notifications are then automatically recorded in the original message in your Sent Items folder. In both cases, you receive a message notification when your message is delivered or read. A read receipt tells you that your message has been opened. A delivery receipt tells you that your e-mail message was delivered to the recipient's mailbox, but not whether the recipient has seen it or read it.
